Established in 1899, the University's music department was first directed by Edwin E.Sheldon, composer of the Susquehanna University alma mater. Over the next 100 years the study of music would evolve into a strong music program. In this 1997 image, a student uses a computer in the music lab to aid in her composition.

The University's music department was established in 1899 and found its first home in a brick house that once belonged to the University's fifth president, Jonathan Rose Dimm. By 1958, the department was moved to a new building, Heilman Hall, which has since been expanded and renamed the Cunningham Center for Music and Art.
