This collection contains the archive of documents, photographs, and brief publications and correspondence revolving around the evolution of Susquehanna University from 1990 through 1999.

School of Natural and Social Sciences, Susquehanna University, School of the Arts
In the summer of 1999, two new schools debuted at Susquehanna University, The School of Arts, Humanities and Communications and The School of Natural and Social Sciences. The School of Arts, Humanities and Communications encompassed the departments of art, communications and theatre arts, education, English, history, modern languages, music, philosophy, religion, and classical studies. The School of Natural and Social Science served the departments of biology, chemistry, geological and environmental sciences, mathematical sciences, physics, political science, psychology, sociology and anthropology. Prior to 1999, the academic structure was last reorganized in 1983.

Apfelbaum Hall, the new home of the Sigmund Weis School of Business and the Department of Communications, opened its doors in the fall of 1999. Today it is a high technology learning center for the entire campus.

This 1998 image shows the site preparation for Apfelbaum Hall, the new business and communications building. Previously, this area had been the home of three cottages built in the late 1860s to house married theology students.

The rock group The Badlees, based out of Selinsgrove, rose in popularity in the 1990s. The group's lead singer, Pete Palladino, was a 1990 Communications and Theater Arts graduate of Susquehanna, The band was best known for the song "Angeline is Coming Home" which hit number 67 on the Billboard Top 100.

The Library's online catalog grew quickly in popularity and the old card catalog was deemed a "relic of the past."

In 1991, the Blough-Weis Library brought its new computerized card catalog online, simplifying research methods. The original card catalog was kept in the library for anyone wanting to use it, but was no longer being updated.

The dining experience for students at SU evolved a great deal from the more formal era of the 1940s and 1950s to the casual offerings of entrée lines and salad bars of the 1990s.

All students residing on campus are required to have their meals in the Degenstein Campus Center Evert Dining Hall. In the 1990s the weekly menu was published in the campus newspaper, The Crusader.

As more students began bringing cars to campus, parking became a bigger and bigger issue. It was not uncommon to drive around campus several times before a spot could be found. The number of parking tickets issued in 1980 was 30. In 1991 it was 900. Despite the sharp rise, the Director of Public Safety felt there was adequate parking available on campus.
Religious services, Students, Susquehanna University
The Christmas Candlelight Vigil has been an annual tradition at Susquehanna since 1966. Attended by students, faculty, staff and friends, the service begins in the dark with only one lit candle carried by the chaplain. From this single light, all of the candles are lit until the room moves from darkness to light. The University chorus is seen sharing the light in this 1996 photo.

Groundbreaking for the expansion and renovation of the Charles B. Degenstein Campus Center was held on May 7, 1991. Opening remarks were made by Harold C. O'Connor, Chairman of the Board of Directors. A new theater and art gallery were part of the expansion.

Calvin Trillin, an author best known for his humorous writings, gave the University's 141st commencement address to 1999's 381 graduating seniors. Trillin was honored with the honorary degree of Doctor of Humane Letters during the ceremony.

As the divorce rate among the parents of SU students began to rise in the 1990s, the Counseling Center formed a support group for those whose parents were separated or divorced. Weekly, hour long meetings gave students the opportunity to voice any fears, stresses or worries involved with their familial situation.

In 1989, it was decided that the "knight" would be eliminated as the Crusaders' mascot. Rytter & Associates as well as a mascot committee were charged with developing a new graphic identity for the team. The new graphic was unveiled in the April 8, 1994 edition of the Crusader.
