The Association for Women instituted a Big Sister/Little Sister program at Susquehanna University in 1984. The goal of the group was to help make the college transition as seamless as possible for incoming freshman women.

The Micro-Monitor Operators were a group of students who were familiar with the IBM Personal Computer. Their purpose was to advise students using the computers in the campus computer labs. Later the group changed their name to the Micro-Computer Monitors. The student monitors are seen in this 1985 image.

The Cycling Club was established in 1986. The group's activities included group rides as well as participation in races in Pennsylvania, New York and New Jersey. The group's membership is shown in this 1987 yearbook photo.

Gertrude James '89, a philosophy major, helped to form the organization Minority Concerns. The club's goal was to "take out cultural monotony and replace it with cultural diversity". The idea to form the club took root in 1988. There was a noted lack of minority students at Susquehanna University. Ms. James' role in the group was to help minority students with any problems they might have and to coordinate efforts within the University to address these problems. The group presented radio shows during Black History month on WQSU, about black figures who contributed to history, guest speakers such as Robert Kalamho, who spoke of his native country, Namibia, and Griot music programs involving traditional music and story telling.

The Ice Hockey Club was open to anyone who was interested in the fundamentals of ice hockey and enjoyed playing the "world's fastest sport". The group participated in leagues and made road trips to compete with other colleges. The club smiles for the camera in this 1988 Lanthorne photo.

Anyone interested in investing was encouraged to join the Investments Club. Professors were also permitted to participate. Workshops, discussions, and lectures helped the club make a real investment through E.F. Hutton. Club dues were used in investments.

The singing group Playing By Ear was formed in 1988. Students in any major were permitted to join and no audition was required. The group specialized in popular show and jazz music.

The Society of Physics Students was formed so that students could discuss topics not touched upon in the classroom. Liquid crystal displays, meteorological defense satellites, and RCA laboratories are a few examples of the group's discussion topics. They also took field trips to such places as the New York Hologram Museum and Goddard Space Center. As we can see from this 1985 image, clearly there were a few Star Wars and Indiana Jones fans in the crowd as well. Look out for those light sabres!

Seen in this 1987 photo are the members of SHOE (Students Helping Our Elderly). Participants visited the Selinsgrove Senior Center every day to talk and play cards or bingo with the elderly. Members also provided services such as raking leaves, shoveling snow and moving furniture.
