Sigma Kappa, Fraternities & sororities, Susquehanna University
The sorority, Sigma Kappa, joined Greek life at Susquehanna University in 1963. Becoming active in campus activities, the group held an annual volleyball tournament benefitting the American Heart Association and sponsored a spring formal. Shown here is the 1984 sisterhood of Sigma Kappa.
Sigma Phi Epsilon, Fraternities & sororities, Susquehanna University
Greek life continued to expand at Susquehanna in the 1980s. A colony of Sigma Phi Epsilon was introduced in 1982 and became a chapter one year later. Shown in this 1983 image are the brothers of Sigma Phi Epsilon.

Charles B. Degenstein's generous gift to the University established the Sigmund Weis School of Business, in honor of his father-in-law, Mr. Weis, class of 1903. Mr. Degenstein poses with University President Jonathan Messerli in this 1982 photo.
Society of Physics Students, Clubs, Students, Physics, Susquehanna University
The Society of Physics Students was formed so that students could discuss topics not touched upon in the classroom. Liquid crystal displays, meteorological defense satellites, and RCA laboratories are a few examples of the group's discussion topics. They also took field trips to such places as the New York Hologram Museum and Goddard Space Center. As we can see from this 1985 image, clearly there were a few Star Wars and Indiana Jones fans in the crowd as well. Look out for those light sabres!

In the spring of 1980, the Student Government Association sponsored a Spring Weekend for students. The Sponge Throw, sponsored by the Chapel Council, allowed students to " take out their frustrations on their favorite professor or administrator" by throwing a wet sponge at them. Among the names listed on the schedule were then President Messerli, Coach Garrett and Dean Anderson. Shown is student Curt Steiner throwing a drenched sponge at his "favorite" faculty member.

The first computer at Susquehanna was rented by the University in 1973 and was used to gather statistical information. Computers came into everyday use in the 1980s. The University received two large grants used to fund three microcomputer labs on campus. These labs were used to enhance the growing instruction in computer technology.

The first University Thanksgiving dinner for students was held in 1978 and quickly became an annual tradition. Faculty and staff volunteer their time to carve turkeys and serve the students a festive holiday meal. Candles, tablecloths and cloth napkins make it a truly special event.
