The Grotto, Coffeehouses, Susquehanna University
The Grotto, a student-run coffee house, opened on October 4, 1971. The evening’s entertainers were members of the group Brown Jenkin.
Von Trapp, Maria, The Sound of Music, Speakers, Program Board, Susquehanna University
The Susquehanna University community was asked by the Program Board to vote on a visit from Baroness Maria Von Trapp, the inspiration for the movie “The Sound of Music”. Von Trapp did lecture at SU in 1975 and received rave reviews. A signed copy of Von Trapp’s book “The Story of the Trapp Family Singers” can be found in the Blough-Weis Library Archives.

Betty Friedan, feminist and writer of The Feminine Mystique, spoke about the Women’s Liberation Movement at Susquehanna University in the spring of 1973.

The 1975 Hockey Club, eventually becoming the Ice Hockey Club, was a co-ed club that played at the Sunbury Ice Rink. The team competed against other college clubs.

Members of the International Club, established in 1971, are shown in this yearbook photo. Members of the club promoted a cultural exchange between the foreign students and the campus and local communities.

Lambda Chi Alpha brothers make a statement with their “change” of image. The oldest fraternity on campus began as the Bond and Key. Long gone seemed to be the quiet gentlemen in jackets and ties as motorcycles and kegs are the props used in this photo.

The Housing and Boarding section of the 1970 Susquehanna University Bulletin reminds students of requirements for living on campus. It clearly states that there is no campus housing for married students. If a student marries during the academic year, he or she is required to notify the Personnel Deans and leave University housing.

Narrator Lorne Greene, best known for his role on the TV show “Bonanza,” is seen working with the writer of “The Colonial Keystone: Pennsylvania.” The historical documentary was recorded in a studio in Northumberland. SU students, faculty and alumni were part of the project.

Ground was broken in 1975 to build two additions to the Alumni Gymnasium. The east side addition would hold a pool and the north side addition would have a basketball court.

The Portable Newport Folk Festival, a traveling version of the Newport Folk Festival held in Newport Rhode Island, entertained students and community members in Susquehanna University’s Chapel Auditorium on April 20, 1972.

Rugby came to Susquehanna University in 1971. It was started by James Handlan of the Math Department. Handlan also helped start the ice hockey team in 1975.
