Shown in this 1968 yearbook photo are the freshmen class officers. Calvin McCants would go on to become the Student Senate president in 1971.

Alpha Xi Delta was a social sorority founded in 1957. The sorority sponsored the campus Easter Egg Hunt. The children of faculty members enjoy the hunt in this 1961 image.

The Best Dressed Coed was a popular contest at Susquehanna. Contestants were nominated by campus sororities and fraternities and the winner represented Susquehanna University in a contest sponsored by Glamour magazine. Hair, makeup, posture, figure and fashion were the criteria used to determine the Best Dressed Coed. Shown here is the 1966 winner of the title, Cheryl Dowling.

Always a day to remember, Commencement 1967 was especially memorable. The Baccalaureate was marked by a massive blackout and the service was carried out in darkness.

Cross country track began at Susquehanna University in 1961 under the direction of coach David Hindman. The cross country tradition continues today as the University supports both a men's and women's team. This image shows the 1962 cross country team.

The Dames Club was an organization created by Susquehanna University wives. The club held monthly meetings under the direction of Mrs. Jean Grosse. The club's membership is seen in this 1962 photo.

The Debate Club was formed in 1964 and would meet weekly to train and hone debates. The group participted in several competitions throughout the year with other universities and in 1966 participated in a debate held at Cambridge University. This image shows the Debate Club's 1964 membership.

Groundbreaking for Fisher Science Hall named for George E. Fisher, a professor of natural science, took place in 1962. This photograph shows members of the Susquehanna University community laying the cornerstone of the new building. The science hall opened for business in 1964.

Organized in 1964, the Forensic Society inspired great debate. The group participated in debates in six states, winning the sweepstakes trophy at Elizabethtown College in 1965 and 1966 and appearing in a televised debate with Cornell University. Shown in these images are the Society's 1967 officers and membership.

Greek life was very active at Susquehanna during the 1960s. Fraternities and sororities helped students form close friendships while maintaining their group's long standing traditions. Initially founded as social organizations, fraternities and sororities developed service programs in order to give back to the community.
Buildings, Construction, Susquehanna University, Gustavus Adolphus Hall
Originally erected in 1894, Gustavus Adolphus Hall was destroyed by fire in 1964. Desperately in need of a new student union, the University began construction on a new student center which was completed in 1968.

Homecoming has been a great celebration at Susquehanna since 1922. Themed floats have played an entertaining role in Homecoming parades as fraternities and sororities often tried to out do each other in order to take home the trophy for the best float. These 1967 snapshots are just a few examples of the impressive floats Susquehanna has seen in its Homecoming History.

Susquehanna began cheering on its football team with October 21, 1922's "Alumni Day," the University's original Homecoming. Celebrations have continued over the years and traditional Homecoming activities include the crowning of the Homecoming Queen, dances, parades with elaborate floats and of course, the traditional football showdown. These images from the 1967 Lanthorn show students enjoying various Homecoming activities.

Formed in 1920 as the number of fraternities on campus climbed, the Inter-Fraternity Council was meant to ease competition between the Greek organizations. The group established rules for Greek life and helped to guide inter-fraternity social life. This photograph shows students enjoying a watermelon eating contest at a festival sponsored by the IFC in 1966.

James Garrett became athletic director and coach of the University's football team in 1960. Under his direction, the Crusaders enjoyed an undefeated season in 1962. Coach Garrett left the University in 1966.

In an effort to stress the importance of physical fitness, President John Kennedy challenged Americans to finish a 50 mile hike in 20 hours, a feat required of U.S. Marines. Five Susquehanna students accepted that challenge and hiked from Selinsgrove to Harrisburg. The participants clocked an exceptional time of 16 hours, 32 minutes. This image shows the weary walkers plugging away along a snow lined road.
