In 1966, a dress code was still routinely enforced in the Horton Dining Hall. While school clothes were permitted at the noon meal, a more formal standard was set for evening and Sunday meals. Having a guest? Reservations required!

Times were changing in the 1960s and SU students began questioning the purpose and value of "outdated" regulations. Dressing for dinner had been a long standing rule at Susquehanna, established at a time when dinner was an individually-served affair. With dinner now served cafeteria-style, students requested that a modified dress code be given a chance to succeed.

Formed in 1920 as the number of fraternities on campus climbed, the Inter-Fraternity Council was meant to ease competition between the Greek organizations. The group established rules for Greek life and helped to guide inter-fraternity social life. This photograph shows students enjoying a watermelon eating contest at a festival sponsored by the IFC in 1966.

The International Citizens Organization (I.C.O.) was formed to help interested students become well informed voters and citizens. The group's 1967 members are shown in this photograph.

James Hazlett, a member of the class of 1952 and a player on Susquehanna University's undefeated 1951 football team, became the University's head football coach and Athletic Director in January of 1966. He was selected over 200 other applicants and served the University until 1978.

James Garrett became athletic director and coach of the University's football team in 1960. Under his direction, the Crusaders enjoyed an undefeated season in 1962. Coach Garrett left the University in 1966.

In an effort to stress the importance of physical fitness, President John Kennedy challenged Americans to finish a 50 mile hike in 20 hours, a feat required of U.S. Marines. Five Susquehanna students accepted that challenge and hiked from Selinsgrove to Harrisburg. The participants clocked an exceptional time of 16 hours, 32 minutes. This image shows the weary walkers plugging away along a snow lined road.

In 1960, John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon were locked in a race for the presidency. September of that year saw the creation of the Kennedy Club on campus. The club's purpose was to spark political interest in those students eligible to vote in the November election.

Many college students in the United States wanted American involvement in the Vietnam War to end. This letter to the editor, published in a 1969 edition of The Crusader, imagined what war would be like if fought with different weapons.

The library at Susquehanna University was originally constructed in 1928 and then expanded on its south side in 1958. This image captured the library as it appeared in 1961.

Constructed in 1928, the University library was expanded in 1958. The new addition featured a clock tower. The class of 1962 presented the University with four new clocks for the tower and those clocks are featured in this image from the summer of 1962.

The Marching Brass and Percussion Band also included color guards and drum majors. The band performed for the crowd at home football games. This 1965 photo shows drum major Richard Main working hard to rouse school spirit.

The Men's Day Student Organization was established in 1965. The group functioned as a way for commuters to get to know each other. Students arranged car pools and became more acquainted with the campus community. Shown in this image are the founding members.

In an effort to react more effectively to student concerns, the Student Government Association wrote a new constitution and approved it with a campus wide vote in 1967. The Student Senate organized agencies charged with specific tasks. One agency was responsible for big name entertainment. "The Association," known for their hit "Along Comes Mary," performed for students in April 1967. The band would go on to open the Monterey Pop Festival in June of that year.
