Founded in 1953 by Dr. Al Zimmer, participation in Future Teachers of America was just one of the extra-curricular activities available to students. The organization allowed future educators to share their common interest. Shown here are its members in 1955.

Buildings, Universities & colleges, Heilman Hall, Susquehanna University, Spangler, Mary Heilman
Built on old potato fields, a new music building was constructed with the help of the centennial appeal. The building was dedicated in 1958 and was named Heilman Hall in recognition of Mary Heilman Spangler, who had donated a large sum in honor of her father and brother. Shown in this image are students on their way to class in the new building.

Because the music department had outgrown its area in the Conservatory Building, Heilman Hall was built in 1958. In recognition of Mary Heilman Spangler, the new building was named in honor of her father John Heilman and brother Stephen Heilman.

Under the direction of the Men's Student Council, freshmen students built the homecoming pep rally bonfire. Seen in this photograph is the 1957 homecoming bonfire held the day before the big game.

Homecoming was a special annual event at Susquehanna University. Just before the Homecoming football game, a parade showcasing floats created by the students, including those living in fraternities and sororities, made its way through Selinsgrove. This photo shows a 1957 Homecoming float.
Greek letter societies, Lambda Chi Alpha, Bond and Key, Susquehanna University
The original Lambda Chi Alpha, formerly Bond and Key, fraternity house was located at 309 University Avenue. In 1961, the fraternity sold the house and built a new residence next to rival fraternity Theta Chi. Shown from left at the 309 University Ave address in 1958 are Lamda Chi Alpha members T. Pupo, F. Gates, Monuments, Memorials, Landes, Latimer, Woodruff, John Irwin, 1864-1962, Susquehanna University
The eastern gateway to the Susquehanna University campus was named for Latimer Landes, an alumnus and member of the University's Board of Directors. In order to make room for the gateway, a tree dedicated by the class of 1888 was removed. On Homecoming Day in 1959, a plaque was dedicated in honor of the tree. Dr. John Woodruff, shown standing beside the plaque, was the last surviving member of the class of 1888.
Libraries, Card catalogs, Blough-Weis Library, Susquehanna University
In 1908 the fourth president of Susquehanna University, Franklin Manhart, arranged to have the library's book collection cataloged in accordance with the Dewey Decimal System. The card catalog system was used until the library became automated in 1991. This image shows a student putting the catalog to good use in 1959.
Gustavus Adolphus Hall, Students, Social Life, Susquehanna University
The first floor of Gustavus Adolphus Hall was renovated in 1951, in the midst of several campus building improvements. It took on the role of a student union with a snack bar, bookstore, lounge and student post office. The lounge provided the perfect place for these members of the junior class to share a bowl of ice cream in 1954.
Men's Student Council, Susquehanna University, Behavior
The Men's Student Council was revised in 1924 under the leadership of Roger Blough, who would later become the chief executive officer of the United States Steel Corporation. The Men's Student Council initiated the student handbooks and also played a leading role in maintaining student judicial order. Shown in this image are rules from the 1958 Men's Student Council Handbook.

This image shows 1955 May Queen Carlene Lamade and her court. Lamade was also Homecoming Queen that same year. May Day celebrations included a dance and a pageant. The festivities concluded with a dance around the May Pole in honor of the Queen. Founded in 1958 as the Missionary Institute, Susquehanna University began its history with just one building named Selinsgrove Hall. In 1958, the University celebrated its centennial and at the time of this benchmark had expanded to include nine buildings. Gustave W. Weber served as Susquehanna University's Eleventh President from 1959 to 1977. Under his leadership, the University doubled its physical size and in 1965 the new chapel/auditorium was named Weber Chapel and Auditorium in his honor.
