Libraries, Blough-Weis Library, Susquehanna University, Roger M. Blough Learning Center
The original Library building was constructed in 1928. Due to the increasingly large book collection and the need for more study space, an addition was built on the south side of the building in 1958. This image shows the University Library as it appeared in 1959. As noted in the previous image of Roger M. Blough, the Library was later named the Roger M. Blough Learning Center in appreciation of his contribution to the 1972 expansion.

Bogar Hall was built in 1951. It was named after alumnus Jerry Bogar and his son Guy Bogar. It housed the school's humanities programs, but mostly business programs were held in the building. Because of Bogar Hall's curvy stage entrance stairway, located at the main entrance, outdoor graduation exercises were held there throughout the 1950s.

The Business Department was developed at Susquehanna University in 1903. Previously it had been called the Commercial Department. In 1957, the Business Department offered Bachelor of Science degrees in Business Administration and Business Education. Two and Four year diplomas were also given for the Medical Secretarial and straight secretarial courses.

The Business Society's monthly meetings allowed business students to plan business-related programs and field trips and share their common interest. This image shows the Society's 1957 membership.

Created in 1931, the Business Society was formed so that business students could gather to discuss "the affairs and problems in the business world." Secretarial students were also encouraged to join the group. Shown in this image are the 1957 officers of the Business Society.

In 1858, Susquehanna University (Missionary Institute) started with one building, Selinsgrove Hall. The physical expansion of the campus continues over the years. From the pages of the 1952 Lanthorn, a map showing the current and future sites of campus buildings was drawn. Notice, at that time, tennis courts were separated for the men and women.

In 1951, under the direction of coaches Amos Alonzo Stagg, Sr. and Jr., Susquhanna University had its first undefeated and untied football team. Shown are members from that team.

Founded in 1953 by Dr. Al Zimmer, participation in Future Teachers of America was just one of the extra-curricular activities available to students. The organization allowed future educators to share their common interest. Shown here are its members in 1955.

Under the direction of the Men's Student Council, freshmen students built the homecoming pep rally bonfire. Seen in this photograph is the 1957 homecoming bonfire held the day before the big game.
Maypoles, May Day, May queens
This image shows 1955 May Queen Carlene Lamade and her court. Lamade was also Homecoming Queen that same year. May Day celebrations included a dance and a pageant. The festivities concluded with a dance around the May Pole in honor of the Queen. College presidents, Weber, Gustave, Susquehanna University
Gustave W. Weber served as Susquehanna University's Eleventh President from 1959 to 1977. Under his leadership, the University doubled its physical size and in 1965 the new chapel/auditorium was named Weber Chapel and Auditorium in his honor.
Selinsgrove, Pa., Susquehanna University
The first building at Susquehanna University was named Selinsgrove Hall after the town in which it was built. The town of Selinsgrove and the University have a close connection and these images show places that Susquehanna students might have frequented in 1959. Some of these "familiar sights" no longer exist as pictured here.

Recreational activities offered to students in their freshman year made adjusting to campus life a little easier. Many long lasting friendships were also made during this time. Photos shown are from the freshman class of 1951.
May Day, Homecomings, May queens, Susquehanna University
Post-war, May Day and Homecoming were again celebrated. This 1950 Lanthorn photo shows May Queen Joan Apple and Homecoming Sweetheart Jane Southwick. Both were selected by the student body. Joan Apple would later help to establish the Jane Conrad Apple and Joan Apple Zimmerman Fund in 1980. The fund is used to purchase books and sponsor events related to Elizabethan Studies. The Jane Conrad Apple Rare Book Room in the Blough-Weis Library was created in Jane Apple's honor.

In 1950, the first woman to ever compete on Susquehanna University's Men's Tennis team was Barbara Stagg. The team was coached by her father, Amos Stagg Jr.
