The first building at Susquehanna University was named Selinsgrove Hall after the town in which it was built. The town of Selinsgrove and the University have a close connection and these images show places that Susquehanna students might have frequented in 1959. Some of these "familiar sights" no longer exist as pictured here.

Each year, the senior students would climb to the top of Mahanoy Mountain in Northumberland and once at the top a student would scale the flag pole and attach the SU banner. This image shows members of the Class of 1959 atop Mahanoy Mountain. Led by Susquehanna University's President, this tradition continues to this very day.

A student lounge and snack bar was housed on the first floor of the newly renovated Gustavus Adolphus Hall. In 1955, students made good use of the space. Notice that smoking was permitted.

The Susquehanna University Centennial Year was celebrated in 1958. At that time the only published history of the Institute was The Story of The Story of Susquehanna University was written by William S. Clark, class of 1948, and Dr. Arthur Herman Wilson, a Professor of English. Clark wrote about the Institute's history from 1858 to 1927. Wilson wrote about the Institute's history from 1928 to 1958. Shown here is the cover page of The Story of Susquehanna University. The next history of the University would not be written until 2008, when Emeritus Professor of History Donald D. Housley completed his account in time for the University's Sesquicentennial.

The Student Christian Association sponsored a variety of campus activities including freshman orientation and Wednesday chapel. In 1955, the Association sponsored a Korean war orphan named Kim Tong Kun and announced the sponsorship in The Susquehanna newspaper.

This 1951 bulletin, released by the University, describes in detail the measures being taken by Susquehanna to resolve the issue of overcrowding in the dormitories. It also addresses the dormitory rules as well as the steps for reserving a room.

This 1956 advertisement from The Susquehanna newspaper announced the showing of the film "Love Me Tender." The movie, playing at a Sunbury theater, starred a very young Elvis Presley.

Dating at Susquehanna in the 1950s reflected the conservative tone of the times. In the 1950s, Seibert Hall was a women's dormitory. Gentlemen callers had to leave the building by 11:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday and by 10:00 p.m. on Sunday. This 1954 picture shows couples saying goodnight on Seibert Hall's front porch.

The Susquehanna University Wives' Club was established by the wives of day students as a way for their families to get together and socialize. The new organization was announced in May 1957.

Post-war, May Day and Homecoming were again celebrated. This 1950 Lanthorn photo shows May Queen Joan Apple and Homecoming Sweetheart Jane Southwick. Both were selected by the student body. Joan Apple would later help to establish the Jane Conrad Apple and Joan Apple Zimmerman Fund in 1980. The fund is used to purchase books and sponsor events related to Elizabethan Studies. The Jane Conrad Apple Rare Book Room in the Blough-Weis Library was created in Jane Apple's honor.

In honor of Susquehanna University's One-Hundredth Anniversary, a book on its history was written by William S. Clark, class of 1948 and Dr. Arthur H. Wilson, Professor of English since 1931. An article from The Susquehanna Alumnus announces that the book is finished and will be ready for publication by the Susquehanna University Centennial year.
