Amos Alonzo Stagg Sr. joined his son, head football coach, Stagg Jr. as assistant coach in 1947 and ushered in a post- World War II athletic revival effort at Susquehanna. The father and son duo helped the University football team achieve a winning record and this time in Crusader football history became known as the "Stagg Era." The "Stagg Era" lasted from 1947 to 1952.

The 1949 Lanthorn was dedicated to the legendary "Grand Old Folks of Football," Mr. and Mrs. Amos Alonzo Stagg, Sr. Stagg assisted his son, head coach Amos Alonzo Stagg, Jr. with coaching duties. His wife Stella served as a sort of football scout, reporting her finds to her husband and son.

In 1947 Selinsgrove Hall, the oldest building on campus, was damaged by fire and water. At the time the building housed both dormitory rooms and administrative offices. The initial cause of the fire was thought to be a defect in the building's wiring. It was later determined that a student living in the hall had set the fire.

The Latin Club, previously known as the Ciceroniani, was formed in 1947 and lead by Professor Meader. The object of the organization was to spark interest in the Latin language and culture.

During World War II, women outnumbered men at Susquehanna five to one. The end of the war and the institution of the G.I. Bill caused a boom in male enrollment that evened out by 1949. This photo shows the male enrollment on campus in 1949. Please note the two students wearing Bond and Key jackets. Bond and Key was a local fraternity formed in the spring of 1945. It later became Lambda Chi Alpha.

The 1948 junior class reflected on the many changes that came with war's end. Returning veterans had valuable lessons to teach and made a welcome addition to the classroom. Campus renovations, the "Stagg Era" in football, and fire in Selinsgrove Hall also helped to shape their Susquehanna experience.

The Susquehanna University Band had a somewhat erratic history. Conceived in 1917, the band fell in and out of Susquehanna history. Its membership changed over the years. Predominantly male at its beginning, membership became almost exclusively female due to World War II. The group ceased to exist from 1944 to 1946 and was reorganized in 1948 for the entertainment of students and faculty. This image shows the 1948 Band in full uniform.
