In January of 1942 presidents and deans of American colleges and universities met on two occasions to discuss the special challenges war posed to higher education. President Smith and Dean Galt attended these meetings and quickly adopted an accelerated academic program at Susquehanna so that students might finish a four year course of study in three years.

The Federal Government contracted with Susquehanna University to house, feed, and educate men of the 35th Detachment of the Army Air Corps from March of 1943 to May of 1944. This photo shows staff officers of the Corps posing in front of Steele Science Hall, their headquarters.

Claude Buss, a member of the class of 1924, handled the surrender of Manila for the State Department during World War II. He was later held by the Japanese as a prisoner of war from 1942 to 1943. After his release, Buss continued to serve the State Department and worked closely with General MacArthur during the occupation and rebuilding of Japan.

Meals were served family-style in the Horton Dining Hall. Students were assigned tables. A host or hostess at each table would lead the group in prayer.

The Business School offered a two year course of study in secretarial science. Students were trained to work in an office setting and were taught dictation and typing.

During World War II, women outnumbered men at Susquehanna five to one. The end of the war and the institution of the G.I. Bill caused a boom in male enrollment that evened out by 1949. This photo shows the male enrollment on campus in 1949. Please note the two students wearing Bond and Key jackets. Bond and Key was a local fraternity formed in the spring of 1945. It later became Lambda Chi Alpha.

With the help of the Women's Athletic Association, women's athletic programs at Susquehanna University progressed. Although field hockey was the most common sport, basketball, softball and archery were also played.

The Women's Athletic Association sponsored women's intercollegiate athletic competitions. Intramural teams were formed and competed against other colleges. While field hockey was the first varsity team formed and the most heavily played sport, games of basketball, softball and golf were also scheduled.
