In the fall of 2005, students from visiting assistant professor John Bodinger's Thought and Social Science class placed 1,994 flags in the lawn in front of the Degenstein Campus Center. The flags represented the number of American soldiers that had died in Iraq since the war began in March of 2003. The purpose of the display was to make the Susquehanna community more aware of the war in Iraq and the death toll that was its result.

A set of Christmas lights was the culprit in a small fire in an Aikens hall dorm room on February 16, 2001. A student, who also served as a volunteer fireman, used a hallway extinguisher to put out the fire.

After undergoing renovations, the Encore Café was renamed Benny's Bistro in 2006. The restaurant was named in honor of Benjamin Kurtz who was the founding president of the Missionary Institute.

In an effort to conserve space, the Blough-Weis Library installed electronic compact shelving on the ground floor in 2002. The new shelving held history books and books from the bibliography and index sections. The compact shelving enabled an additional five to seven years of growth.

In 2002, Susquehanna University was named one of the most beautiful colleges in the nation. It also placed 18th out of 20 among colleges in the administration category of "students who were happy with financial aid" as well as 10th in the social life category of "more to do on campus."

On October 7, 2000, Susquehanna University introduced its new mascot, The Caped Crusader. The mask and cape- wearing tiger made its debut before the University's Homecoming crowd.

In January 2001, Clyde's Place opened in the University's newly renovated fitness center. Fresh fruit, soups, salads and bakery items were some of the foods offered. The café was named for Clyde H. Jacobs, who along with his wife, donated one million dollars to the campaign to renovate the athletic facility.

The spring of 2005 saw the beginning of renovations to the Degenstein Campus Center. The renovation plan included the redesign of the Evert Dining Hall, Encore Café and Mellon Lounge. The diagram shows how Evert Dining Hall would appear after renovations.

The band "Faculty Lounge" performed in a charity concert on campus to help with the Hurricane Katrina relief effort. The band was comprised of four Susquehanna University faculty members. The concert raised $1,400 and that amount was matched by the University.

In March of 2000, Biff-Burger, a popular fast food place for students and citizens in Selinsgrove and the surrounding area announced that it would be closing its doors due to the retirement of its owner. The restaurant had been serving the area since 1965 and was the first burger place to take up residence on "the strip."

In 2007, Professor Emeritus of History Donald Housley's book entitled Susquehanna University 1858-2000: A Goodly Heritage was published by Susquehanna University Press. The book gives an account of the University's history and its many "firsts" from its founding year to 2000. This photo shows Professor Housley in the University's archives, where he did the research for his book.

President L. Jay Lemons, along with 130 other presidents and chancellors of the nation's colleges and universities, signed his name to the Amethyst Initiative in favor of the movement to reconsider the U.S. drinking age laws. Lemons choose to support the Choose Responsibility issue because of its "great significance on college campuses all across the country."

In March of 2005, Public Safety officers began patrolling the campus using both vehicles and bicycles. It was a way for Public Safety to interact with the community more and allowed officers to see areas that could not be seen from a vehicle.

To help ease the crunch of housing on campus, the second Sassafras complex was built in the summer of 2002. The $4.2 million complex consisted of two townhouse buildings as well as a large central building.

In August of 2005, Hurricane Katrina, one of the costliest and deadliest hurricanes in history, hit the United States, leaving behind mass destruction. To help aid victims of this catastrophe, brothers of the Tau Kappa Epsilon fraternity asked for donations while standing outside of various local restaurants. Their goal was to raise $2,000.
