About This Collection

Lycoming College and its predecessor, Dickinson Seminary, has served the central region of Pennsylvania since 1812. The school carries an historic connection to the Methodist Church and was associated with Dickinson College in the early years. At this time, the collection represents the digitization of 16mm films showing moving images of buildings and events on campus from 1930-1960.

The first segment is a montage of views from around the campus, that includes Clarke Building & Chapel, John W. Long Library, Rich Hall, the Old Fine Arts Building, the Hilltop Gymnasium, and Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Hall. Next the choir is led by director Walter G. McIver on the steps of the Flag Court. Some of the students present in the choir are Floyd Todd, Ruth Perry, William Darrow, James Nolan, James Poulliott, Lawrence Swartz, Mary Anne Ciraulo, Jo Ann Spencer, Dale Bower and Mary Huffman. The final view in this segment shows President D. Frederick Wertz and College Treasurer Kenneth Himes viewing the construction of Wesley Hall, circa 1955.

The first segment shows a group of students and staff, which include Professors J. Milton Skeath and James W. Sterling, heading off campus for a chestnut party. The chestnut party was a longstanding Dickinson Seminary tradition. This is followed by footage of the groundbreaking festivities for the John W. Long Library. The groundbreaking for the John W. Long Library was in 1949. Visible in this groundbreaking segment are James Sheaffer (band director), Walter McGiver (choir director), Professors Milton Skeath and Eric Sandin, Rev. Larry Lykins and Rev. Claire Switzer.

The Long family's, including John W. Long, Jr., and trustees' arrival for the dedication of the John W. Long Library begins this segment, followed by a reception/check-in at the college being manned by G. Heil Gramley and George W. Howe. Views of the inside of the new library, which include librarian Noreen C. Blum checking out books to John P. Graham and members of the Long family viewing part of the library finish this segment.

The segment follows the dedication ceremony of the John W. Long Library, on October 20, 1951. Mrs. Mildred Lewis Long, wife of John W. Long, and other members of the Long family are seated in the front row of the audience. Richard H. Lundy , President of Lundy Construction Company, who built the library, formally presents the building to the Honorable Robert F. Rich, Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the college. Judge Rich presents the ceremonial "key" to the building to President Long, who then addresses the crowd. Bishop Charles Wesley Flint officiates the Act and Prayer of the Dedication, while Rev. Lawrence W. Lykens gives the Benediction.

The unveiling of Dr. John W. Long's portrait and dedication plaque ceremonies inside the John W. Long Library, with Dr. Long and members of his family, as well as a Long family group shot follows. The final footage is the Homecoming Court and crowning of the homecoming queen on the steps of the John W. Long Library.
