This collection contains materials pertaining to the history of Keystone College from its inception as Keystone Academy in 1868 as the first higher educational institution in Northeast PA.

Sam Lilly Bell

Sam Lilly Bell, Academy Bell, Harris Hall Bell, Keystone College (La Plume, Pa.)-Art Piece-History

Originally named the Keystone Academy Bell or Harris Hall Bell (after the dedication of the building) has had a long history on campus. Perched on top of Main Hall (Harris Hall) it was used to waken students in the morning and call them to Chapel services in the evening. It hung above Harris Hall until the structure was weakened by deterioration. It was said that when the bell was rung it would cause serious vibrations throughout the whole building. The bell was rededicated at the Sam Lilly bell in honor of beloved grounds keeper, Sam Lilly. The bell was re-hung in front of Capwell Science Hall in 1977 and is rung before every convocation.
