Anderson, the first library director of Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, expressing his regret in Mr. Anderson's decision to give up library work and move to Missouri. Mr. Carnegie writes of his appreciation for Mr. Anderson's establishment of the ""model Library"" and conveys best wishes for Mr. Anderson and his family.

Andrew Carnegie writes to James B. Scott to inform him of his planned return to New York from Scotland in September (1890), as well as his intention in traveling to Pittsburgh in October (1890). Carnegie goes on to briefly discuss plans and estimates for the construction of the Carnegie Institute, and expresses his hope that the buildings will be contracted for so that, operations begin next year in the Spring (1891).

Carnegie asks Lambie to forward a letter to the Mayor and City Councils of Pittsburgh. In this letter, Carnegie offers a list of his proposed trustees for the Carnegie Library: James B. Scott, W.J. Holland, Henry Clay Frick, George Macbeth, Reuben Miller, J.F. Hudson, David McCargo, William N. Frew. H.K. Porter, E.M. Ferguson, Robert Pitcairn, and John B. Jackson are included.

A typescript letter presumably from Andrew Carnegie to William Anderson Magee, Mayor of Pittsburgh. In the letter Carnegie states that if a ""Commission from Manchester"" visited America they would not report that ""Pittsburgh had the best Library system"". Carnegie finds that Cleveland, to which he had given ""$480,000 for ten branch libraries, is spending $350,000"" per year on it's libraries.
