A New York Times newspaper article which recounts a confrontation between Andrew Carnegie and School Director A. A. Hamerschlag over the possibility of turning the Pittsburgh Technical Schools into a university. The article reports that Carnegie is withdrawing financial support from the Technical Schools in order to show his disapproval of the plan. The article also makes reference to recent tension between the Technical Schools and the University of Pittsburgh.

A copy of a typescript letter from E. Ray Lankester to William Holland written in answer to Holland's letter of June 10th requesting input on the particulars of the installation of the Diplodocus carnegii reproduction at the British Museum. Lankester addresses the matters of support bases and the placement of the skeleton within the Museum and notes that another museum employee will be in contact with Holland regarding transit and delivery details. The remainder of the letter discusses various installation timetable options based on the availability of King Edward VII, Andrew Carnegie, and museum trustees and employees to attend an installation ceremony.

An unsigned typescript letter presumably from James Bertram, Andrew Carnegie's personal secretary, to Samuel Church, Secretary of the Carnegie Institute Board of Trustees, acknowledging receipt of Church's April 23rd letter and informing him that Mr. Carnegie is leaving for Europe in two days and has no time to prepare a letter, presumably for the upcoming Founder's Day celebration. A handwritten notation on the letter says, ""Founder's Day.""

A newspaper clipping from the March 12, 1909 (?), World, which features a cartoon of Andrew Carnegie presenting a diplodocus model to King Victor Emmanuel of Italy for placement in the geological museum of Bologna University. Below the cartoon is a fictionalized tongue-in-cheek account of the dialogue that took place between Carnegie and the King during the presentation.

A signed typescript letter from Samuel Church to Louise Carnegie expressing the hope that she and her husband will be able to come to Pittsburgh to take part in the upcoming Founder's Day celebration. Church notes that the principal speaker, Governor Hadley of Missouri, would be pleased to share the platform with Mr. Carnegie. A handwritten penciled notation on the letter indicates that attendance is impossible due to an upcoming trip to St. Louis. An unrelated (?) handwritten penciled notation on the back of the letter says, ""W.H. Kohlsach (spelling?), Holland.""

A typescript address of appreciation to Andrew Carnegie for the Carnegie Institute, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh and the Carnegie Institute, Technical Schools. Written by the Art Society of Pittsburgh. Adopted by the Art Society of the City of Pittsburgh in appreciation of the gift of $3,800,000.00 given by Andrew Carnegie to the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh. Signed by J. A handwritten letter from W.J. Holland to Andrew Carnegie concerning the cost and shipment of a replica of a Diplodocus (Diplodocus carnegii skeleton, located in Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) to the National Museum in Buenos Aires (i.e. the La Plata Museum located near the city of Buenos Aires, Argentina). Holland states, per Carnegie's letter he received, the cost to make and install a replica of the Diplodocus would average around $6,000. The average cost of past replicas that were made had been $5,860 a piece. He does note that the freight to Argentina may be higher than the freight to other past destinations. Carnegie also asked how long it would take to make the replica and Holland states that it will take six weeks to make, another six weeks to get it to Buenos Aires and four weeks to mount the specimen in the museum.

A typescript letter from W.J. Holland to Romulo S. Naon, Argentinean ambassador to the United States concerning the donation of a replica of a Diplodocus (Diplodocus carnegii skeleton, located in Carnegie Museum, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania) to Argentina. Holland states that Andrew Carnegie has asked him to comply with the request of the president of Argentina (Sa?enz Pen?a), via the ambassador of Argentina Ro?mulo S. Naon, for a replica of the Diplodocus that the Carnegie Museum owns. He notes that similar replicas have been given to King Edward VII and other heads of state. Holland requests that Naon put him ""in communication with the proper authorities of the museum in your country"" that will be receiving the replica. He needs to know the amount of space the exhibit will use and asks Naon tell the museum to make bases for the display. Holland also needs to know their ""wishes and purposes in reference to the installation. Inlcudes ink notation at the top of letter.

A typescript letter from William Nimick Frew to Andrew Carnegie concerning an accompanying newspaper clipping, Understanding with Carnegie, presumably from a local Pittsburgh, Pa. newspaper, about Andrew Carnegie and the mayor of the City of Pittsburgh. The article hints that there is some understanding between Andrew Carnegie and Mayor Guthrie regarding Carnegie Institute. Mayor Guthrie does not indicate what that understanding is. Mr. Guthrie does go on to state that Mr. Carnegie would not endow the library. Because the building size of the Carnegie Institute has increased, the newspaper article speculates that Mr. Carnegie may help out with the increased expenses that the larger building may incur. In the letter Mr. Frew states ""somebody has been talking"" and he assures Mr. Carnegie that it was not him. He also includes a P.S. on the back of the letter that reminds Mr. Carnegie that the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Board of Trustees is meeting to receive estimates from different subcommittees of the Board for maintenance of the different departments and buildings for the next fiscal year. The Executive Committee will report to the full Board of Trustees their recommendations which will then be presented to the Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh. Mr. Frew states that the maintenance of the portions of the new building that are to be occupied by the Carnegie Institute (the Fine Arts and Museum departments) should be looked into for the meeting of the Executive Committee.
