The letter explains that Andrew Carnegie received his note and often notices references in newspapers about the appropriation of the City of Pittsburgh for the maintenance of the Library and the Carnegie Institute of Pittsburgh. The correspondent asks Mr. Frew to make it clear that the appropriation is for the Library.

An initialed handwritten letter from Judge Joseph Buffington to William Frew, Carnegie Institute Board President, concerning the efficacy of a libel suit against newspapers which have published inaccurate and negative news stories about Frew, the Pittsburgh Technical Schools, and School Director Arthur Hamerschlag. Buffington advises that there is no basis for a libel suit and that filing such a suit would just lead to more negative publicity.

A typescript letter from Samuel Harden Church, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute, to Andrew Carnegie regarding a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute held on December 18, 1900. At this meeting Mr. Carnegies letter dated December 15, 1900 was read, in the letter Mr. Carnegie placed the charge of the new Technical School under the Board of Trustees. At this meeting it was resolved that the Board of Trustees accept the charge of the new Technical School and further resolved that the President and Secretary be requested to send a certified copy of the letter from Mr. Carnegie to Mr. Frew, dated December 15, 1900, to the Mayor of Pittsburgh.

A typescript letter, presumably from Samuel H. Church, to Andrew Carnegie, concerning a letter Andrew Carnegie sent, dated January 19, 1911, to Frew and the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute on what they would do with an extra fifty or a hundred thousand yearly income for the Institute. The Board does not feel there is a need for a new department for Carnegie Institute at this time; the present needs of the Technical Schools are being taken care of by Carnegie's endowments; the Board does believe that they can use $100,000 additional income in ""carrying forward and extending the work of the Museum and Fine Arts departments"" ; and the Board will transmit to Carnegie the ""reports of the Directors of the Museums and Fine Arts departments"" so that Carnegie can be acquainted with ""scope"" and ""purpose"" of these departments and the ""cost of developing them"". They also transmit a letter from the director of the Technical Schools with similar information.

Typescript letter (carbon copy) from the secretary of Carnegie Institute's Board of Trustees to the president, quoting from Andrew Carnegie's letters of Nov. 15 and Dec. 15, 1900, to the Mayor of Pittsburgh and W.N. Frew, respectively, endorsing the founding of a technical school and placing it under the control of the Institute, in response to a request from Charles S. Crawford, president of Pittsburgh Common Council and a board member, for information on the school and what voice the City of Pittsburgh would have in its control. The board has adopted resolutions, to be sent to Crawford, stating that the Board accepts the charge of the new technical school and that a certified copy of Carnegie's letter of December 15 be sent to the Mayor of Pittsburgh. Crawford and the other members of the Board of Trustees will also be sent a pamphlet detailing the plan and scope of the proposed school.

Typescript letter dated April 29, 1909 from unknown to Dr. John Ross stating that Mr. Carnegie asked him to send a copy of an enclosed letter from Mr. W.N. Frew to Andrew Carnegie. The related letter is dated April 23, 1909 and is from William Nimick Frew to Andrew Carnegie regarding the latest board meetings. The letter states that increased numbers were seen in reference and circulation, and that Mr. Franks and Howard Heinz were elected to the Board.
