A typescript letter (signed) from Frank D. Millet to James Bertram concerning a bust of John Paul Jones. Millet explains that although Andrew Carnegie has expressed interest in having a copy of the bust for the Carnegie Institute, John W. Beatty has ignored his (Millet's) correspondence on the matter. Includes handwritten note from Andrew Carnegie to John Beatty. On letterhead of the American Academy in Rome.

Typescript letter. Chicago banker Fritz von Frantzius tells Carnegie that he is a regular visitor to the Carnegie Institute's annual exhibitions and has bought some of his best paintings there. Among the art works that he viewed on his last visit was a landscape by John W. Beatty, whom Frantzius also met for the first time. Frantzius recommends, in confidence, to Carnegie that the painting not be allowed to leave the Institute and instead be added to the permanent collection.

A signed typescript letter from Harrison Morris, Managing Director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, to Andrew Carnegie requesting confirmation that Carnegie would like to commission a copy of the Academy's portrait of Judge Ross by Thomas Sully for the Carnegie Institute and recommending that American painter William Chase be the one to prepare the copy. Morris also thanks Carnegie for contributing the painting ""Autumn Sunrise"" by Leonard Ochtman for the Academy' s 100th anniversary exhibition and notes that he is sending Carnegie copies of an announcement and a recent pamphlet relating to the Academy.

A signed typescript letter from Harrison Morris to James Bertram, written in response to Bertram's letter of November 28th. Morris explains that he recommended William Chase to copy Thomas Sully's painting of Judge Ross for the Carnegie Institute because he was under the impression that Mr. Carnegie wanted the copy to be a distinctive work of art which would gain in value by reason of its painter. Morris now suggests commissioning Hugh H. Breckenridge, a Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Schools instructor, to prepare the copy.

A signed typescript letter from Harrison Morris to James Bertram, written in response to Bertram's letter of December 5th. Morris reports that Hugh Breckenridge has accepted the commission to copy Thomas Sully's painting of Judge Ross for the Carnegie Institute for the price of $500. A handwritten notation at the bottom of the letter says, ""Letter advising completion of picture sent.""

Bertram notes that, though both Mackie pictures were rejected by the artists committee for the Carnegie Institute's annual international art exhibition, Andrew Carnegie encourages the artists to try again.

Bertram assures Millet that he must be mistaken about John Beatty's presumed lack of interest in obtaining the replica of the bust of John Paul Jones that has been offered the Carnegie Institute, about which Andrew Carnegie has expressed enthusiasm.

A typescript letter from James Bonar, President of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh to Andrew Carnegie expressing the need for a permanent exhibit of works by local artists. While he praises the galleries in the Carnegie Institute and the ""International Exhibition"" he feels that the International is ""keyed so high"" and a portion of the general public ""is quite unable to understand, comprehend or appreciate its fine points"". Bonar feels it is important to encourage local artists, mentioning an upcoming exhibition to be held at the Carnegie Galleries in November of local artists works. Bonar then requests Carnegie's financial help in creating a permanent exhibit of works by local artists. He explains that Mr. John W. Beatty, Dr. W.J. Holland, Mr. Hyatt, Mr. Arthur W. Sparks and Mr. Setter of the Technical schools and others are interested in helping with this effort. Bonar writes that he is including a copy of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh's constitution and by-laws. On Associated Artists of Pittsburgh letterhead. Signature of James Bonar.
