A typescript letter, presumably from Andrew Carnegie, to the mayor of the City of Pittsburgh, George W. Guthrie, concerning certain newspaper clippings (not included). Mr. Carnegie states that he knows how to handle newspaper articles as he has had a lot of experience in dealing with them. Carnegie explains that he has corresponded to Mr. Frew, President of the Board of Trustees, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and that he thinks the City of Pittsburgh is ""doing remarkably well in spending about Two Hundred Thousand Dollars a year upon their Libraries"". Mr. Carnegie suggests that the City of Pittsburgh should pay a fair fixed sum for the parts of the new building that the city occupies as a Library. Carnegie then expresses his opinion on an upcoming banquet given by the City of Pittsburgh for foreign guests. Handwritten notation on right side of letter.

A typescript letter from Andrew Carnegie to William Frew discussing the city of Pittsburgh's yearly allotment for their library system. Carnegie notes that if the allotment is maintained at the same level as last year, possibly with an increase for the newest building, he believes that funds for the upcoming year will be sufficient. In order to avoid surprises on either side and to help further the trustees' agenda, Carnegie recommends that Frew keep in close contact with city officials.

A letter from Andrew Carnegie to William Nimick Frew, President of the Board of Trustees, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, in reference to a letter from Mr. Frew dated December 13, 1906, states that he would like to ""take care of everything but the Library proper"". Mr. Carnegie wants to have his ""fund"" used ""to pay for the ""portion of the Building the Carnegie Institute occupies"". Mr. Carnegie goes on to give his opinion that the City of Pittsburghs annual payment of $200,000 for its ""Libraries"" for the current population is ""doing very well indeed, judging by what I see other cities do"". Carnegie then states that the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh is near the front of public library facilities and that ""she gets the full worth of her money and even more"".

A typescript letter presumably from Andrew Carnegie to W.N. Frew concerning several items. Carnegie expresses his and his wife's concern over the illness of Frew's wife. Mr. Carnegie then states that he is glad to hear of the increase for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh from the City of Pittsburgh and would like ""every member of our Board"" to ""win the confidence of the Mayor and Members of Council"". Finally, Carnegie thinks that the heads of Frew's departments (of the Carnegie Institute) including, Hamerschlag, Beattie and Holland should ""develop something"" and ""spred (i.e. spread) themselves, each setting forth the unequeld (i.e unequaled) capabilities of his won (i.e. one) department"".

A typescript letter from Andrew Carnegie to William Nimick Frew, President of the Board of Trustees, Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, concerning a letter he received from Mr. Frew dated November 15, 1906. He explains that Mr. Robert A. Franks will be sending Mr. Frew money and Mr. Franks can then keep off sufficient coupons from the ""Bonds"" that Andrew Carnegie is to give Mr. Frew. Mr. Carnegie, in reply to Mr. Frew's determination of the amount of money that needs appropriated for the fiscal year, tells Mr. Frew that the Commission ""should leave that largely to the City officials"" and the amount that the City of Pittsburgh wants ""to spend on its Libraries is its own affair"". Guthrie, the Mayor of Pittsburgh, Pa. to Andrew Carnegie concerning unauthorized newspaper rumors about Andrew Carnegie contributing to the maintenance and operation of the Library. Mr. Guthrie reassures Mr. Carnegie that he did not indicate to reporters that Mr. Carnegie would contribute to the maintenance and operation of the Library. Mayor Guthrie told the reporters that Mr. Carnegies policy was to leave the maintenance and operation of the Library to the City of Pittsburgh. A typescript letter from William Nimick Frew to Andrew Carnegie concerning an accompanying newspaper clipping, Understanding with Carnegie, presumably from a local Pittsburgh, Pa. newspaper, about Andrew Carnegie and the mayor of the City of Pittsburgh. The article hints that there is some understanding between Andrew Carnegie and Mayor Guthrie regarding Carnegie Institute. Mayor Guthrie does not indicate what that understanding is. Mr. Guthrie does go on to state that Mr. Carnegie would not endow the library. Because the building size of the Carnegie Institute has increased, the newspaper article speculates that Mr. Carnegie may help out with the increased expenses that the larger building may incur. In the letter Mr. Frew states ""somebody has been talking"" and he assures Mr. Carnegie that it was not him. He also includes a P.S. on the back of the letter that reminds Mr. Carnegie that the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, Board of Trustees is meeting to receive estimates from different subcommittees of the Board for maintenance of the different departments and buildings for the next fiscal year. The Executive Committee will report to the full Board of Trustees their recommendations which will then be presented to the Mayor of the City of Pittsburgh. Mr. Frew states that the maintenance of the portions of the new building that are to be occupied by the Carnegie Institute (the Fine Arts and Museum departments) should be looked into for the meeting of the Executive Committee.
