A photograph of the front view of a silver gilt casket for a burgess ticket from Dumfries, Scotland, admitting Andrew Carnegie as burgess and freeman of the "Royal Burgh of Dumfries" in recognition of his being a "self made man", the "magnificence of his gifts", his "diffusion of light and knowledge amongst the people of Scotland and America" and "his many handsome and public libraries erected at his cost". The burgess ticket also goes on to thank him for a gift of a public library for Dumfries, Scotland and Maxwelltown, Scotland. The casket has ornamental engravings, decorations and the name Andrew Carnegie engraved over a likeness of him that is in the middle of the container within a circle. The likeness of Andrew Carnegie has a reclining figures on each side of him. The top of the container has a silver statute of Saint Michael slaying a dragon. The right side of the container has a scene of a river, bridge and buildings engraved in it. Caption title.; On cardboard mount: 26 x 35 cm
