An unsigned typescript letter presumably from James Bertram, Andrew Carnegie's personal secretary, to explorer Frank Kleinschmidt in response to Kleinschmidt's letter of March 12th requesting financial support for an upcoming Arctic expedition. Bertram notes, that though pleased with a recent Kleinschmidt lecture, Carnegie does not wish to supply additional funding beyond what the Carnegie Institute has already provided.

Contains a newspaper clipping and handwritten letter. The newspaper clipping from an unidentified newspaper reports that Andrew Carnegie has offered President Roosevelt a ""large salary to take up educational work at the end of his term"". Mr. Carnegie was reported as leaving ""a system for education that will make John D. Rockefeller's Chicago University pale into insignificance"". The article states that Carnegie was evasive when asked about the Washington (D.C.) rumor and he said: ""I can't be blamed for what folks want to imagine"". The handwritten letter from Samuel H. Church to Andrew Carnegie makes reference presumably to the above mentioned newspaper clipping of March 18, 1908. In the letter Church expresses his interest in Roosevelt taking charge of the ""associated institutions at Pittsburgh"". Church writes that he could ""oversee the Literary and Publicity departments"" and he could also leave the ""railroad"". He ends by writing ""we would (beat?) the world.""

Poynton comments on: Church's letter on the Teachers Insurance and Annuity Association; his regrets about having to discontinue their discussion on the topic of the Carnegie Institute; the improved health of Andrew Carnegie and his interest in ""all things, particularly the progress of the Allies."" Poynton also extends an invitation for the Churches to come to Lenox and stay as his guests at the Curtis Hotel. On Shadowbrook letterhead.

Beatty of the Art Society of Pittsburgh writes to Andrew Carnegie about arrangements for borrowing and acquiring artwork for exhibition for the opening and dedication of the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh, and the Carnegie Institute. Beatty mentions arrangements made with the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, as well as his intention to inquire after the collections of prominent Pittsburghers, Carnegie included.

A handwritten typescript letter from John Beatty, Carnegie Institute Director of Fine Arts, to Andrew Carnegie informing him that Beatty is in New York to study the W.T. Evans art collection with a view towards acquiring one or two paintings for the Carnegie Institute. Beatty notes that he will be happy to call for Carnegie if he would like to come along and see the Evans collection as well as other artworks currently on exhibit. The letter also contains a brief mention of Beatty's distress over Samuel Church's attitude toward the Carnegie Institute pension plan.

Beatty to Andrew Carnegie concerning Mr. Robert Vonnoh's opinion of the Carnegie Institute, Dept. of Fine Arts' permanent collection of paintings and Vonnoh's current exhibition at the Carnegie Institute. Beatty writes that he is enclosing a copy of a letter he received from Vonnoh, presumably dated November 20, 1914, and notes that Vonnoh is a painter in ""high standing"" and his opinion is valuable. He also notes that American landscape painter, H.W. Ranger, presumably Henry Ward Ranger, also express a similar opinion of the Institute. Includes penciled shorthand near top of letter. Marked ""Signed for the Director in his absence"".
