A typescript letter from Samuel H. Church to Anders L. Zorn stating that the Trustees of the Carnegie Institute authorize him to paint a portrait of Andrew Carnegie, ""for a price not to exceed $5,000"". Church writes that he understands that Zorn will begin painting Carnegies portrait when he is done with President Taft's portrait. He then writes that he wants Zorn to inform him when Mr. Carnegie will be expected for the first sitting. Church explains that Carnegie will leave New York City on April 26th to go to Pittsburgh, Pa. to the Founder's Day celebration and will return to New York City on April 26th. He asks Zorn if he would start the portrait before Carnegie leaves for Pittsburgh and resume when he returns to New York. Church asks Zorn to please acknowledge receipt. In a P.S. Church states that they want Zorn to paint a larger portrait of Carnegie and asks what the size would be for the $7,000 price.

A typescript letter from Samuel Harden Church, Secretary, Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute, to Andrew Carnegie concerning a letter Mr. Church received from Carnegie on June 17, 1901. Church states that they will wait to hear from him in regards to Grover Cleveland speaking at the upcoming Founders Day celebration and that he will still ask Lord Rosebery or Mr. Balfour to ""come over here"" on some future occasion. If Mr. Cleveland cannot attend Church likes the idea of Prime Minister Laurier of Canada speaking at the upcoming Founders Day celebration. Mr. Church then expresses regret that Carnegie is not planning to attend any more of the celebrations until the opening of the new building which may not happen for two or three more years. Church writes that he has been ""stirring up"" city officials in securing the land for the institute and the ""Technical Schools"". Mr. Church states that the committee on ""Plan and Scope"" for the Technical Schools recommends obtaining a plot of 50 or 60 acres. He states that Mrs. Schenley owns 60 acres that could be purchased. The Museum has four expeditions doing scientific work and the Art Gallery ""is going slowly"". He then writes that Mr. Webster the museums taxidermist is in Europe with Childs Frick. A typescript letter from Samuel Harden Church to Andrew Carnegie concerning his visit with ex-President Grover Cleveland and his wife Mrs. Frances Cleveland at their home in Princeton, N.J.. While there they discussed Founder's Day at the Carnegie Institute. He states that Mrs. Cleveland also plans to attend the Founder's Day celebration where Cleveland will speak. Church also mentions that they talked about portraits of Mr. Cleveland and Mrs. Cleveland which prompts Church to wonder if they would donate them to the Carnegie Gallery. He concludes by stating that Mr. Bigelow tells him that the ground for the extensions (presumably the Institutes building extension) is ""about ready to hand over"".
