A unsigned copy of a typescript letter from Andrew Carnegie to Samuel Church, Secretary of the Carnegie Institute Board of Trustees, written in response to a copy of a January 6th letter that Church sent to Carnegie Institute of Fine Arts Director John Beatty. Carnegie expresses endorsement for getting the Byers pictures, presumably the art collection of industrialist Alexander M. Byers, into the Carnegie Institute gallery as a first step, with permanent possession as the ultimate goal.

An unsigned typescript copy of a letter from Andrew Carnegie to William Frew authorizing modifications to the manner in which the Carnegie Institute insures paintings that are sent to Pittsburgh for the annual international art exhibition. The letter contains both the text of the original agreement, dated June 20, 1898, and the text of the revised agreement, dated May 6, 1913.

A signed typescript letter from John Beatty to Andrew Carnegie informing him that the paintings by Scottish artists C.H. Mackie and Peter Mackie that John Ross brought to Carnegie's attention in a March 31st letter were not accepted by the jury of award for the Carnegie Institute's annual international art exhibition and that they will eventually be returned to the painters. An initialed handwritten postscript in ink notes that Beatty is planning to sail to Europe at the end of May and he hopes to get together with Carnegie for a visit to the Royal Academy.

A signed typescript letter from John Beatty to Andrew Carnegie thanking him for the April 4th telegram he sent to be read to the members of the jury of award for the Carnegie Institute's annual international art exhibition and informing him how impressed the foreign members of the jury, Ren Prinet and Henry Caro-Devaille, were with the manner in which the exhibition was conducted.

The letter is accompanied by a carbon copy of a letter that Beatty recently sent to McTaggart requesting the submission of a painting for the upcoming annual Carnegie Institute international art exhibition.

Beatty quotes a recent letter from painter and jury member, Charles Davis, lauding the consistent quality of the annual exhibition and he encloses a March 20th Pittsburg Dispatch article containing photos and brief biographies of the jury members.

Beatty notes that the changes are necessitated by a recent Interstate Commerce Commission action that requires shippers to declare the full value of paintings in shipment, resulting in greatly increased transportation rates.
