A unsigned copy of a typescript letter from Andrew Carnegie to Samuel Church, Secretary of the Carnegie Institute Board of Trustees, written in response to a copy of a January 6th letter that Church sent to Carnegie Institute of Fine Arts Director John Beatty. Carnegie expresses endorsement for getting the Byers pictures, presumably the art collection of industrialist Alexander M. Byers, into the Carnegie Institute gallery as a first step, with permanent possession as the ultimate goal.

A signed typescript letter from Harrison Morris, Managing Director of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, to Andrew Carnegie requesting confirmation that Carnegie would like to commission a copy of the Academy's portrait of Judge Ross by Thomas Sully for the Carnegie Institute and recommending that American painter William Chase be the one to prepare the copy. Morris also thanks Carnegie for contributing the painting ""Autumn Sunrise"" by Leonard Ochtman for the Academy' s 100th anniversary exhibition and notes that he is sending Carnegie copies of an announcement and a recent pamphlet relating to the Academy.

A signed typescript letter from Harrison Morris to James Bertram, written in response to Bertram's letter of November 28th. Morris explains that he recommended William Chase to copy Thomas Sully's painting of Judge Ross for the Carnegie Institute because he was under the impression that Mr. Carnegie wanted the copy to be a distinctive work of art which would gain in value by reason of its painter. Morris now suggests commissioning Hugh H. Breckenridge, a Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts Schools instructor, to prepare the copy.

A typescript letter presumably from James Bertram, Andrew Carnegie's personal secretary, to Ellery Sedgwick, editor of Leslie's Monthly Magazine, acknowledging receipt of Sedgwick's November 9th letter and reporting that, though gratified by Sedgwick's request that he write a magazine article about the Carnegie Institute Department of Fine Arts, Mr. Carnegie feels that a better person to write the article would be Museum Director John Beatty.

A typescript letter presumably from James Bertram, Andrew Carnegie's personal secretary, to Harrison Morris, written in response to Morris' November 22nd letter to Carnegie. Bertram reports that Carnegie feels a great original artist like William Chase should not be spending his time making copies of paintings and Carnegie would prefer that Morris commission another painter to copy Thomas Sully's painting of Judge Ross for the Carnegie Institute.

A signed typescript letter from John Caldwell, Chairman of the Carnegie Institute Board of Trustees Fine Arts Committee, to Andrew Carnegie requesting approval to spend Committee funds to erect a temporary structure to house the 9th annual art exhibition during the upcoming Founder's Day celebration. Caldwell explains that unless a temporary building is erected, the exhibition will have to be canceled because the permanent art gallery is being used to store books during library renovations and the Committee has been unable to locate another building suitable to house the exhibition. Caldwell requests a ""yes"" or ""no"" answer and a handwritten notation at the top of the letter says, ""Mr. Carnegie called. 'Yes.'""

A signed handwritten letter from John Ross, Chairman of the Carnegie Dunfermline Trust, to Andrew Carnegie calling his attention to two paintings by artists associated with Dunfermline, one by Peter Mackie and one by Charles H. Mackie, that are being sent to Pittsburgh for the upcoming Carnegie Institute annual international art exhibition. An initialed note in pencil at the top of the letter indicates that Carnegie forwarded the letter to John Beatty asking for his opinion of the paintings.

A signed typescript letter from John Beatty to Andrew Carnegie informing him that the paintings by Scottish artists C.H. Mackie and Peter Mackie that John Ross brought to Carnegie's attention in a March 31st letter were not accepted by the jury of award for the Carnegie Institute's annual international art exhibition and that they will eventually be returned to the painters. An initialed handwritten postscript in ink notes that Beatty is planning to sail to Europe at the end of May and he hopes to get together with Carnegie for a visit to the Royal Academy.
