A signed typescript letter from William Frew to Andrew Carnegie written in response to Carnegie's letter of July 8th. Frew apologizes for the tone of his June 22nd letter and assures Carnegie that he did not intend to imply that Carnegie was in any way to blame for the Carnegie Institute's current year budget shortfall. Frew goes on to describe progress made towards completing a new Institute building and promises to send Carnegie detailed information about expenditures.

A signed typescript letter from William Frew to Andrew Carnegie asking him to advance the Carnegie Institute additional money to make up a budget shortfall for the current year which will occur due to a misunderstanding about when interest was payable on some bonds included as part of Carnegie's original endowment. A handwritten initialed note from Carnegie on the back of the letter instructs Carnegie's business secretary Robert Franks to send the money, but the note has been crossed out.
