A folded handwritten letter (what appears to be a draft of a letter) from Andrew Carnegie to Samuel Harden Church, Secretary, Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute, concerning the acceptance by ex-President Grover Cleveland (presumably to speak at the upcoming Founders Day celebration). Carnegie continues by stating that he hopes the ""additions can be pushed"" and he praises the men who manage the Institution.

A typescript copy of a letter from Andrew Carnegie to Samuel Harden Church in response to a letter from Samuel Harden Church dated June 6, 1901, concerning speakers for Founder's Day 1901. Carnegie writes about potential speakers including, Mr. Balfour, President Grover Cleveland and Prime Minister Laurier of Canada. Mr. Carnegie states that he plans to attend the opening of the new building (an addition to Carnegie Institute). Carnegie then goes on to write about how he is watching the papers ""anxiously"" for any progress that is being made in ""condemning"" the ground for a new building.

A typescript letter from Samuel Harden Church, Secretary of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute, to Andrew Carnegie regarding a meeting of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute held on December 18, 1900. At this meeting Mr. Carnegies letter dated December 15, 1900 was read, in the letter Mr. Carnegie placed the charge of the new Technical School under the Board of Trustees. At this meeting it was resolved that the Board of Trustees accept the charge of the new Technical School and further resolved that the President and Secretary be requested to send a certified copy of the letter from Mr. Carnegie to Mr. Frew, dated December 15, 1900, to the Mayor of Pittsburgh.

Zorn explaining that the Trustees (presumably Carnegie Institute, Board of Trustees) want him to paint the large $7,000 portrait of Andrew Carnegie. Church asks Zorn to telegraph him as soon as he is ready to return to New York.

A typescript letter from ""President"", presumably Samuel H. Church, president of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute, to Andrew Carnegie praising Carnegie's New Year's address. He asks Carnegie for twenty copies for ""special circulation"". He particularly like the following sentence: ""The brotherhood of man would then have arrived and life on this earth flash forth glimpses of heaven"". Church states he is glad that Carnegie is able to talk about the war with more patience then he has. The letter ends with best wishes for Carnegie's ""happiness"" and ""welfare"" in the New Year.

Church presents to Andrew Carnegie the Carnegie Institute's Board of Trustees plan for establishing a pension fund for the Carnegie Institute (excluding the library) and the Technical Schools. He asks Carnegie to appropriate $100,000 for the fund, with additional annual endowments of $30,000 between 1920 and 1950. A typescript letter from President, presumably Samuel Harden Church, newly elected president of the Board of Trustees of the Carnegie Institute, to Andrew Carnegie regarding the first meeting of the Board of Trustees since Church was elected president. At this meeting Church announced Carnegie's gift of one million dollars to the Institute and the additional allotment of one million dollars that would take the place of the $50,000 annual appropriation that had been made by the Carnegie Hero Fund. Church writes of the gratitude felt by the Board of Trustees for the additional two million dollars to the Carnegie Institute endowment funds. He writes that the new administration is starting out ""beautifully"" and that there is a lot of work to do. Church hopes to send Carnegie a supply of Founder's Day books the following week.

A typescript letter from Samuel H. Church to Anders L. Zorn stating that the Trustees of the Carnegie Institute authorize him to paint a portrait of Andrew Carnegie, ""for a price not to exceed $5,000"". Church writes that he understands that Zorn will begin painting Carnegies portrait when he is done with President Taft's portrait. He then writes that he wants Zorn to inform him when Mr. Carnegie will be expected for the first sitting. Church explains that Carnegie will leave New York City on April 26th to go to Pittsburgh, Pa. to the Founder's Day celebration and will return to New York City on April 26th. He asks Zorn if he would start the portrait before Carnegie leaves for Pittsburgh and resume when he returns to New York. Church asks Zorn to please acknowledge receipt. In a P.S. Church states that they want Zorn to paint a larger portrait of Carnegie and asks what the size would be for the $7,000 price.

A typescript copy of a letter from Samuel Harden Church to Anders L. Zorn, concerning a portrait of Andrew Carnegie painted by Zorn. In the letter Mr. Church expresses his disappointment in the portrait. He states that he has looked at the portrait in different light and distance and examined it carefully and he does not ""find the picture satisfactory under these tests"". Because Zorn only gave Andrew Carnegie four sittings and ""hurried away on the steamer the next morning"" Church feels the portrait was done too quickly and looks unfinished. Church goes on to write about the Trustees (Carnegie Institute, Board of Trustees) desire to have a portrait of ""this great philanthropist"" that would be handed ""down to posterity as a masterpiece"". Church does not feel the portrait meets the Trustees expectations and he doesn't feel the portrait is ""finished and complete"". He ask Zorn if he they should wait until he returns to America to ""complete the work"". Marked ""(COPY)"" at top of page one.

A typescript letter from Samuel H. Church to Andrew Carnegie regarding a resolution by the Carnegie Institute Board of Trustees to authorize a portrait to be painted of Andrew Carnegie. If this is agreeable to Carnegie, Church recommends Swedish painter, Anders L. Zorn to do the portrait. Mr. Zorn had painted the portraits of President Cleveland and Ambassador Hill. Includes signature of S.H. Church and penciled notations.
