Photographs of the first, second and third page of an original typewritten letter sent to President Morton, president of Stevens Institute of Technology, from Francis B. Stevens, Hoboken, New Jersey, dated Oct. 15, 1901. The letter contains information about a piece of rail that accompanies the letter. The piece of rail was from a "portion of one of the rails laid on the Camden and Amboy R.R. 1831-32 between Amboy and Bordentown, N.J., that then connected the cities of New York and Philadelphia by rail". The Camden and Amboy R.R. was founded by John Stevens and his sons, Robert and Edwin. Francis B. Stevens was a nephew of Robert Stevens. A photograph of a reproduction of a letter contained in a casket presented to Andrew Carnegie by the Alumni Association of the Stevens Institute of Technology, Hoboken, New Jersey, in appreciation of funds donated for the construction of what would be known as the Carnegie Laboratory of Engineering. The letter, written by Francis B. Ogden and addressed to Francis B. Stevens, concerns a shipment of railroad iron, mentioning a bill of lading, which is contained in the casket. The casket also contains a piece of rail made from this iron; the inscription on the inside of the casket's lid describes the piece as "a portion of the first T rail ever manufactured, the same having been rolled in 1831 at the mills of Sir John Guest in Wales under the personal supervision of Mr. Robert L. Stevens who devised the rail and contracted for its manufacture in quantity for the Camden and Amboy R.R. of which he was president and engineer-in-chief." Stevens, Hoboken, New Jersey, dated Oct. 15, 1901. The letter contains information about five sheets that were received by President Morton from a Mr. Watkins. The sheets contained information about a bill for altering the rolls for the Stevens rail; a bill of lading of railroad iron; rails for a Pleasure Road; a letter from Mr. Ogden, dated March 31, 1831, stating that a cylinder had been shipped, shipments of the Stevens rail; a letter from Mr, Ogden dated July 15, 1831, stating that the locomotive (John Bull) was shipped and information about rails and railway track. Original typewritten pages of the letter accompany photographs and are in a separate folder.
