A typescript copy of a letter from Albert J. Barr to William Nimick Frew concerning a letter that was written to, Albert J. Barr, editor of the Pittsburgh Post about the Carnegie Institution and Library. This letter entitled: Carnegie gift's versus city's maintenance of Carnegie institutions, presumably written by Mary Copley Thaw criticizes the ""waste"" in management of the Carnegie Institute and Library and the amount of money the cities who are gifted with Carnegie libraries have to pay to maintain them. Mr. Barr suggests to fill the next vacancy on the Board of Trustees with the election of Mrs. M. C. T (i.e. Mrs. Mary Copley Thaw).

Holland, Henry Clay Frick, George Macbeth, Reuben Miller, J.F. Hudson, David McCargo, William N. Frew. H.K. Porter, E.M. Ferguson, Robert Pitcairn, and John B. Jackson are included.

A typescript copy of a letter from Andrew Carnegie to Samuel Harden Church in response to a letter from Samuel Harden Church dated June 6, 1901, concerning speakers for Founder's Day 1901. Carnegie writes about potential speakers including, Mr. Balfour, President Grover Cleveland and Prime Minister Laurier of Canada. Mr. Carnegie states that he plans to attend the opening of the new building (an addition to Carnegie Institute). Carnegie then goes on to write about how he is watching the papers ""anxiously"" for any progress that is being made in ""condemning"" the ground for a new building.

A typescript letter presumably from Andrew Carnegie to W.N. Frew concerning several items. Carnegie expresses his and his wife's concern over the illness of Frew's wife. Mr. Carnegie then states that he is glad to hear of the increase for the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh from the City of Pittsburgh and would like ""every member of our Board"" to ""win the confidence of the Mayor and Members of Council"". Finally, Carnegie thinks that the heads of Frew's departments (of the Carnegie Institute) including, Hamerschlag, Beattie and Holland should ""develop something"" and ""spred (i.e. spread) themselves, each setting forth the unequeld (i.e unequaled) capabilities of his won (i.e. one) department"".
