Colonel John Frederick Hartranft, John Blair Linn's mentor/friend who was his commander in the Civil War and whom he served under as Assistant Secretary of State and Secretary of State, at the age of 34 years; born in New Hanover, PA in 1830; son of Samuel Engle Hartranft (1807 - 1880) and Mary Lydia Bucher Hartranft (1804 - 1890); graduated from Marshall and Union Colleges; admitted to the bar in 1859; mustered in April 20, 1861 as Colonel and commander of the Pennsylvania 4th Infantry, mustered out July 27, 1861; mustered in July 27, 1861 as Colonel and commander of the 51st Pennsylvania Regiment, promoted to Brigadier General on June 8, 1864, promoted to Brevet Major General on March 25, 1865, mustered out June 15, 1866; awarded the Medal of Honor in 1886; elected Auditor General of Pennsylvania in 1865 and 1868; 17th Governor of Pennsylvania from Jan. 21, 1873 – Jan. 21, 1879; appointed Post-Master of Philadelphia, PA in June 1879; appointed Collector of the Port in Philadelphia, PA in Aug. 1880; died in 1889; buried in Montgomery Cemetery (West Norriton Township, Montgomery County, PA)
