Description

Richard Allen Homes, named after the founder of the African Methodist Episcopal Church, is a housing project in lower North Philadelphia that was funded by the U.S. Housing Authority under the Housing Act of 1937. A collaboration between the Neighborhood Garden Association and Mr. Alton C. Berry, Manager, and Mrs. Ann Nichols, Home Advisor, a multiple year program was formed to "Make Richard Allen Homes the Garden Spot of North Philadelphia."

"In 1953, Louise Bush-Brown organized settlement house workers, and garden clubs into the Neighborhood Gardens Association to sponsor horticultural beautification programs in low income neighborhoods and at public housing projects. Some of today's active community gardeners like Alta Felton and Mabel Wilson began gardening in public with NGA. It had seen 850 blocks planted by its 25th anniversary in 1978 shortly before becoming part of the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society's Philadelphia Green Program." -- Libby J. Goldstein.
