Awarded an honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Pittsburgh in 1928, Conrad was a radio broadcasting pioneer who worked as the Assistant Chief Engineer for the Westinghouse Electric & Manufacturing Company in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania; began what are considered the first regular radio broadcasts from his Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania, garage in 1916; and was responsible for the founding of KDKA, the first licensed broadcast station in the world.
