Pennsylvania Photos and Documents

Welcome to the Abington Senior High School Collection, a part of the POWER Library: PA Photos and Documents. Abington Senior High School dates back to 1888 and serves as the high school for the Abington School District in the Greater Philadelphia metropolitan area.

This collection consists of black and white photographs taken circa 1930 of various tree species found in the Delaware Valley and Maryland that were assembled by the Academy of Natural Sciences Exhibits Department. Locations of trees photographed within the city of Philadelphia include Bartram’s Garden, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia Zoo, Wissahickon Valley Park, Woodlands Cemetery and other locales. Other locations include Chester County, Delaware County, King of Prussia, Valley Forge, West Conshohocken, Mantua, New Jersey and Wye Mills, Maryland. Many of the trees pictured were believed to be at least 250 years old at the time the photographs were taken. The bulk of the photographs are accompanied by a historical exhibit caption with a brief description of the image. The collection also includes a hand drawn map showing locations of some of the photographed trees.

This collection contains photographs from the 1880s to the beginning of the 20th century of Central Pennsylvania College students, faculty, facilities, and grounds.

Albright Collegiate Institute was established in Myerstown, PA in 1895, was re-chartered as Albright College in 1898, and remained in Myerstown until 1928 when it moved to Reading, PA, merging with Schuylkill College.

The Seminary Guard was the student newspaper of the Union Seminary, a forerunner institution of Albright College, and was co-published by the Excelsior and Neocosmian literary societies. Because of financial problems only three issues were published in 1879.

This collection is a digitized copy of the book Architecture—Practical and Theoretical by the Beezer Brothers (1894). The Beezer brothers (Louis and Michael J.) were famous architects who originally set up their firm in Altoona, PA where they built many homes, but then moved on to Pittsburgh and eventually to Seattle, WA.

This collection contains oral histories of the Blair County region of Pennsylvania. The interviews pertain to events that happened in Blair County or stories of Blair County residents.

This collection consists of a digitized copy of the 1977 pamphlet titled, The Great Flood of 1977: A Story of Catastrophe in the Conemaugh Valley.

In 1888, Miss Florence Baldwin founded "Miss Baldwin's School for Girls, Preparatory for Bryn Mawr College" in her mother's house at the corner of Montgomery and Morris Avenues. Thirteen girls were enrolled in the first class. The establishment of the school was frowned upon by many as a "preposterous extravagance" because in the latter part of the nineteenth century the education of a woman still was considered not only unnecessary but also potentially dangerous. Today, as a college preparatory school for girls in Pre-Kindergarten through 12th grade, Baldwin still honors the aims set by Miss Baldwin, adapting them to the needs of today. The Baldwin School Archives collection includes photos, documents, ephemera, and memorabilia, dating from 1888 through the present day. The collection reveals fascinating details about the education of young women in the United States; the history of Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, and the Main Line; and the architecture of the magnificent 1892 Frank Furness Bryn Mawr Hotel (later the Residence of the Baldwin School).
